DIGITAL DERMOSCOPY

Digital Dermoscopy for Skin Cancer Screening

The rates of skin cancer are increasing worldwide, and therefore the medical profession is searching for better ways in diagnosis and management of skin cancers to improve the survival rates in melanoma.

Recent research conducted by the University of Birmingham notes the importance of technologies used to ensure skin cancers are not missed during the skin cancer checks by the doctors and on the other hand, the removals of benign lesions are kept to a minimum.  The study findings suggest that the “examination by the naked eye alone is not sufficient and may lead to melanomas being missed”.

The same is referred to the smart phone applications to check skin lesions which are likely to miss melanoma. The study gives preference to the dermoscopy as the skin cancer detection method.

Digital dermoscopy(computerised system) further enhances the accuracy of the check due to a considerably higher magnification compared to the handheld dermoscopes. Digital dermoscopy also offers the ability to monitor lesions over time hence reducing the necessity of biopsies and excisions for benign lesions.

At OzSkinScan, we use MoleMax High Definition Dermoscopy System which offers 30 x magnification andoffers more superior screening.
